Gay nuns essentially create their own society and it’s less the gayness/love that’s forbidden and more that they’re just really doing their own thing in general that’s forbidden. It is excellllllent.

I often think about these essays and especially about Berry’s catastrophic pond that he built with expert advice, in an attempt to be ecologically responsible on the farmland that he was restoring, that ended up being a major calamity for him. I think about how much we try to have control over things, and how insignificant we are to nature; and at the same time, one of Berry’s major tenets of thought is that we can’t abdicate responsibility even in the absence of individual control. We each are responsible for our actions and that’s not mutually exclusive from collective action. Super interesting and discussion-worthy.

as good as they say. Ferrante has a way of illustrating how people actually are in real life that is so subtle and almost painful in its accuracy. also slightly related: it gives me so much hope that her translator, Ann Goldstein, acquired Italian as a second language, how cool is that

“To crave and to have are as like as a thing and its shadow. For when does a berry break upon the tongue as sweetly as when one longs to taste it, and when is the taste refracted into so many hues and savors of ripeness and earth, and when do our senses know any thing so utterly as when we lack it? And here again is a foreshadowing -- the world will be made whole. For to wish for a hand on one's hair is all but to feel it. So whatever we may lose, very craving gives it back to us again.”

scary as hell. will help you understand more about geopolitics and also realize how little you know about geopolitics. I read this book several years ago and think about it probably multiple times a month still.
