keep a running "questions" list
•••
okay first I wanna say, WHOO GO @Dylan I'm so excited for you (!) and also I'm in the same boat/ I am starting a master's program next week where I will be apprx. 500 years older than everyone else, so I am also feeling rusty and am looking forward to using the recs you get in this post! secondddd, the last time I had a new job, I kept a running open document of questions that would pop up for me - some were really specific and individual, some were more big-picture about how everything came together. then when i would meet with someone (in that case a colleague or my boss) i would decide which questions to run through with them and discuss. it kept things moving so i could keep learning and absorbing in the moment, but then it helped me SO much to clarify things and get deeper knowledge later on. it also helped me make good, real connections with people when i met with them. i'm hoping i can do the same thing in school but with classmates + professors during office hours?! this may also be helpful with ADHD because you can put the questions somewhere and come back to them vs feeling like they'll be lost forever, without having to pull focus from what you're working on at the moment.

Dancefloor logic
•••
This is about how Madonna's new album has dramatically changed my internal self-talk to be nicer to myself and other people. Occasionally I randomly get really anxious in crowded places, like at the grocery store - I feel like I'm in someone's way, or like I'm not moving fast enough, or that I'm somehow Doing Things Wrong. And also it often feels like everyone else also doesn't know what they're doing, in a bad way (see: many memes about how it's everyone's first day on earth at the grocery store for some reason). You know where I'm NOT anxious even a little bit? A super crowded dancefloor. Now when I feel unnecessary anxiety happening I just tell myself that I'm on the dancefloor OF LIFE - there's no wrong way to dance, everyone is just feeling the music in their own way, no one is policing you. You might dance with another person, and it could be really nice, and if it gets uncomfortable or you don't like it, you can just dance away. If someone cuts you in line, you can quietly mutter "Everyone here is a work of art" (Danceteria, 2026) and tell yourself that they're just bumping elbows with you on the dancefloor. This system also reminds me that, just like I genuinely enjoy being on the dancefloor, I genuinely enjoy being around lots of other people in general. Obviously this is super corny and embarrassing, but I have to say that it works for me.

adding an iPhone keyboard in the second language you’re learning
•••
when you add a second keyboard in your target language you will a) text people more easily without autocorrect messing up your shit b) benefit from seeing the correct spelling, accents on letters, etc. c) start to pick up patterns from the predictive text shortcuts. super, super helpful! you just toggle between the two keyboards and it’s so easy! vi consiglio che provarlo.

saying “it’s my first time here!“
•••
when you go into a store or a restaurant or administrative building or volunteering thing or really any place where it’s your first time and they cleeeearly have some sort of inscrutable little system in place, just say this. this seems so silly but it is extremely effective, people will usually be very nice to you and tell you that you have to order the ice cream and THEN show the receipt to the person scooping or whatever the hell situation it is that is not intuitive and not explained anywhere else. just say this in a cheerful voice and it literally makes everything so much easier. x 100 when you’re not a native language speaker, this helps pre-empt lots of questions or awkward miscommunications.

just say hi
•••
whenever you have the option to say hi to someone, just do it. networking situations, weird social encounters, seeing an acquaintance in a place you don’t normally encounter them, passing your neighbor, etc. if it FEELS like it could be appropriate to say hi, if you’re even questioning it, just do it. don’t think about it. take the decision fatigue out of it. 95% of the time this is the right move, will make people like you, or will save you from future awkwardness. in the 5% of times where it’s a little weird it’s totally recoverable and not that big of a deal. ESPECIALLY if you’re nervous about it, just do it. maybe this is obvious but I used to feel awkward in a lot of these settings and doing this makes me feel soooo much more comfortable and in control. just say hi!!!

Travel Gum
€8
•••
a magnificent invention that keeps you from being motion sick minus any side effects (I love Dramamine but it does make me sleepy), plus it’s kind of soothing to chew gum. 10/10. (it does kind of make your mouth numb but it’s also weirdly good that it does, just trust me)
