I hated this book. I’ve seen it on so many “this book changed my life” lists. She learned stuff about herself yeah but it was like… it starts sad and it just gets sadder.

no raisins mixed in food

Raisins have no business in nearly any food. Barely okay for GORP. Never okay for bread, bagels, savory rice dishes, salads, or - lord help me - cookies.

Buy it nice, or buy it twice
•••
A new golden rule I have recently adopted. This goes hand in hand with anti-consumerism and living a low-waste lifestyle (which is better for us and our planet anyways). Obviously, this rule might not be applicable to absolutely everything, but its a good guideline to have if you’re a pro shopper. Nowadays, I try to avoid: Going to stores/malls to browse for “fun” and no real purpose Not doing the research before I buy, especially for expensive tech items Anything composed of plastic (with a few exceptions) Fast fashion Beauty products and merch that are hyped up online/made by celebrities and influencers (ex. Rhode and Parke) Disposable items… including that $8 starbucks coffee I can make at home in a reusable mug Clothes and textiles made of artificial fabrics Gimmicky items being sold on TikTok shop & similar markets by get-rich-quick “influencers” (Speaking from experience of buying many things twice, and learning the sad truths of modern day consumerism)

Let customers pay cash!
•••
Maybe this is a controversial take for some, as I know business owners are looking at it from a streamlining and convenience point of view, but I truly despise the fact that more and more places are refusing to accept cash payments. Not only are you losing customers by doing this, but you are also deliberately excluding a chunk of your community.

If you're a picky eater, grow up
•••
Listen if you have an allergy or a sensitivity that is totally fine I get it this does not apply to you and you are safe from me. But it is the 21st century! Most of the food that has survived this far has done so because it is good. If you're at a nice restaurant and you are asking for things on the side or substituted, you probably don't know better! You're not experiencing the food as it was meant to be experienced.

Hot take: caregivers should automatically receive health insurance and a living wage by the gov
•••
Caregivers (parents who do not work outside of the home or do but do not make a living wage, those taking care of elderly folks and people with disabilities, people caring for trans folks recovering from gender affirming surgeries, your house cleaner and the person who does your laundry, your dog walker and shelter worker and nanny and day care person and and and) should automatically receive gov subsidized health care that covers vision + dental (teeth and eyes are not optional!) and a living wage. People who are on zoom meetings all day talking about how to reorganize digital folders also deserve health care yet people who are doing vital physical labor are under compensated and uninsured. Make that make sense and just advocate to make sure that caregivers across sectors have what they need to stay alive and do their work. Caring Across Generations is linked here because they are doing deep activist and advocacy work for caregivers and our communities.

Because drivers are only thinking about other drivers not pedestrians. I could be wrong but in my head I’m correct haha. That’s right I said what I said. No right turn on red

minimal ingredients is key! I'd go heavy on the basil- light on the olive oil & honey. Jalapeño ratio depends on your crowd

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (film)
•••
Kenneth Branagh's Frankenstein adaptation is not as bad as some folks make it out to be. It means well, it stays pretty faithful to the source material, and I think Robert De Niro plays The Creature brilliantly! That's probably what reanimating a dead corpse might look like (maybe)!

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies Are Fucking Good
•••
Oatmeal raisin cookies always have the hardest PR battle. It just combines two things that people just don't like by themselves and I think it does the cookie a great disservice. But a nicely baked O.R. cookie has one of the best balances of texture and flavor. It's got to be a bit crispy and craggy around the edges but still soft and chewy. It's even better with bittersweet chocolate chips so that you have the fruity sweetness of raisins, the sugariness of the cookie, and the bitterness of the chocolate. It's also got the warmth of spices and is perfect especially for autumn days. Pumpkin pie spices in a cookie?! Com'on.
