no-fail suitcase strategy

I am lucky to travel outside of the US enough times that I have gotten this down pat. the way there, carry on ONLY. as you travel, accumulate souvenirs. the way back, unzip that suitcase expander, check that bag, and replace your carry on with a packable duffel. ensures you 1) don’t overpack, 2) have enough room to buy as much as you desire, and 3) don’t lose your luggage at the most critical part of the trip. I have done many 10-14 day trips with this method!

la grand epicerie + jardins du luxembourg

stroll through the excellent food hall of La Grand Epicerie (adjacent to an incredible shopping mall) and pick up raspberries, cheese, a mustard or chutney, a bar of chocolate, and a small bottle of champagne. walk ~10 mins to the Luxembourg Gardens and stop at Poilane on the way for bread. (of course you can get bread anywhere but Poilane is excellent.) picnic!

buying paper goods on vacation

huuuge fan of buying little trinkets in other cities, especially paper goods. there is nothing more satisfying than a fully stocked stationery drawer made up of items from a bunch of different places. I just returned from Vancouver and this store was particularly charming!

take the ferry from Galway or the Cliffs of Moher, rent an ebike, and eat the best fish and chips + Guinness you’ve ever had. shop for Aran wool with free shipping back home!
