Very Extra Pre-Prepped First Dinner Home
•••
Spend an exorbitant time while pregnant thinking about the first dinner you want to have when you come home from the hospital. For me, I knew I wanted home cooked and I knew I wanted indulgent so I prepped Ina Garten’s rigatoni with sausage and fennel (individually portioned and frozen), Molly baz tomato martinis and a great vinaigrette to dress a salad before I left for the hospital. I know there was a dessert involved but I can’t recall what. That meal was so enjoyable and fortifying! Highly recommend!

Have an Indulgent AM Coffee Routine
•••
Mornings can be… foggy… during the newborn days. I knew I wanted a coffee routine that was easy to execute and made me feel like I was on vacation, even if only for a moment. For me, that was an iced latte. I bought a box of cometeer flash-frozen coffee pods (the best!!), some bougie nut milk from erehwon and Alfred’s vanilla syrup. Good glassware and a nice metal straw too. Takes all of 30 seconds to prepare and makes me feel human again and dare I say pampered? Bonus points if you keep those cheap Amazon eye masks in your refrigerator and throw a pair on every morning while you sip your coffee.

Consider a Night Nurse and Don’t Feel an Ounce of Guilt About It
•••
Honestly this is my #1 newborn rec. If you have the means, consider hiring a night nurse. Even one night a week can make a massive difference. They are little baby whisperers who live for the time of day that is a sleep deprived new parent’s nightmare. Think about that for a second!!! We totally skimped on baby gear, cute clothes, etc so we could afford this and just zero regrets. Put it on your registry. Ask friends, go on your local FB mom group or use care.com to find your angel!!!

Split nights with your partner
•••
This was such an unlock the second time around, allowing both my partner and I to get 4-5 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. Here’s what we did: baby slept in a basket in our living room (we don’t have a bed in the baby’s room so this worked for us). First shift was 10 pm - 2 am. On-duty parent slept on couch in living room and tended to baby as needed, off-duty parent slept in bedroom. At 2, on-duty parent woke up off-duty to swap places. This worked so well for us we wish we had done it the first time around vs. both getting woken up every time the baby fussed or cries.
