The Empathy Exams: Essays (Leslie Jamison)
•••
This book is so special to me and, as the name suggests, taught me a lot about empathy. As humans, we tend to forget that others’ experiences and beliefs can be real and right in their minds and hearts even if we ourselves can’t fully grasp what they feel. The essay about Morgellan’s particularly resonated with me and I still think about in often roughly 13 years after reading this book. Everyone can benefit from reading The Empathy Exams. It is not a self-help book, but it has helped me far more than any self-help book.

Avoid the meanest words in the English language: “Nice to meet you!”
•••
When you say “nice to meet you!” to someone you’ve met and forgotten, but they haven’t forgotten you, that HURTS. I think many of us have been on the other side of the scenario and it can ruin a party/hangout for me, personally. Instead, use the old “great to see you!” It covers you whether you’re seeing someone you’ve met before OR meeting someone for the first time, saving everyone potential embarrassment and (justified) hurt feelings. I’m telling you, this was life-changing advice and I share it with anyone who will listen. It’s quelled quite a bit of social anxiety for me when getting ready to go to a party! I never want to make anyone feel uncomfortable and this is sort of a safeguard for making others feel this particular form of embarrassment
