Interwoven stories of different Indigenous People in Oakland, whose lives converge at a Pow Wow. Gripping, soulful, and very well-written. Save it for when you're available for a heavy and rich read.

I loved Demon Copperhead, and really enjoyed this one too for similar reasons. More wild feminine Appalachian, but with a heartache that reminded me a bit of Demon. Not as masterful necessarily, but almost equally moving.

Utterly tender and real. In Sweden, a man approaches end of life and navigates family, memories, his dog...the cathartic weeping this induced.

the Overstory

Absolutely brilliant ecological interwoven story. "Richard Powers’s twelfth novel unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fables that range from antebellum New York to the late twentieth-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. There is a world alongside ours—vast, slow, interconnected, resourceful, magnificently inventive, and almost invisible to us. This is the story of a handful of people who learn how to see that world and who are drawn up into its unfolding catastrophe." Masterful in every way. Wait until you're ready to dedicate enough brain-power.

Absolutely ripped my heart out. Still thinking about it regularly years later. Top 5 favorite books of all-time. “I could recognize him by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blind, by the way his breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world.”

Maybe the most meaningful book I've ever read. I've listened to the audiobook every Spring after to re-affirm a sense of reciprocity and care for the Earth and its beings. Intensely meaningful and accessible in every way.

I wish I could start this Summer never having read this book so I could spend all day at the pool crying over this in absolute adoration of Larry McMurtry's Character development. This is the longest book I've allowed in a long time and it was an absolute joyride.

A read outside of my normal genre (fantasy-ish), but I absolutely loved this. It has a mystical victorian circus feel. I found this lovely, moving and fascinating.
