Move over Aesop, there’s a fancy new mouthrinse in town. Olas has me hooked. Its power hits you immediately, and leaves your mouth feeling all kinds of funky fresh. Swishing it around is a joy. Meditative, even. (Like oil pulling, without the oiliness.) Olas is the brainchild of NYC dentist and avid surfer Dr. Christopher Perez, who worked with Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten on the taste. The all-natural formula consists of marine bio-actives, marine collagen, sea salts, essential oils, and seaweed extract. No alcohol, no SLS, no fluoride. Plus, the company is just rad. They do beach cleanups and have adopted 150 coral reefs in Fiji (through reef conservationists Coral Gardeners), and the packaging is plastic-free.

Love or hate Chef Dan Barber, he does a lot to shift culture. With the once-humble pantry staple of tinned fish becoming the it appetizer (thanks to Fishwife and their graphic design gods), it seems Barber saw an opportunity to step in with a more sustainable option: plants. Row 7’s new tinned veggies are as delicious as their packaging lets on, especially the tomatoes. The stringy garlicky leeks are a little hard to maneuver on toasted bread — I recommend cutting them up a bit first — but hallelujah to the whole trio, which includes beets. It’s yum, it’s fun, and it doesn’t leave plastic fishing lines hanging out in the ocean!

Salted pandan syrup

Two years living in Bali left me with one major obsession: Pandan. They say it’s the vanilla of Southeast Asia, but there is just something so uniquely delicious about it. I miss it being a common ingredient in my daily life. So when I came across Trăm Phần Trăm’s salted Pandan syrup on a recent trip to DC, I had to give it a whirl, and was immediately back in my happy place. (Well, a few palm trees would also help, but I digress.) Founder Thi Nguyen is an award-winning bartender so it comes as no surprise that this syrup is fine-tuned and well-balanced. I could put it in any drink and love it, alcohol or not — like plain old coconut water. I learned Trăm Phần Trăm means 100% in Vietnamese, which is accurate, because this syrup is a 100% yes.
