Must Read Queer Books
John of John by Douglas Stuart
•••
An incredible book. Couldn’t put it down. Slow, but in the way a good story should be slow, giving you time to sit with the people and the place. A father and son on a small island in the Outer Hebrides, each trying to make sense of a life that feels both small and enormous. Told from both perspectives, the story gets into family, faith, masculinity, love, and all the things fathers and sons struggle to say to each other. Quiet, tough, and beautifully written. A book that stays with you.

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
•••
The Song of Achilles is a retelling of the Greek myth of Achilles, told from Patroclus’s perspective. It follows their friendship and romance as they grow up together and get caught up in the world of gods, prophecies, and the Trojan War. Emotional, beautifully written, and surprisingly easy to get attached to everyone.

Gay Like Me by Richie Jackson
•••
Gay Like Me by Richie Jackson is part memoir, part letter to the author’s son about what it means to grow up gay across different generations. It reflects on identity, love, community, and how much LGBTQ+ life and culture have changed over time — honest, thoughtful, and very personal without feeling heavy the whole time.

Family Meal by Bryan Washington
•••
Family Meal by Bryan Washington follows a young man returning to Houston after a loss, reconnecting with old friends, complicated relationships, and a lot of food. It’s emotional and messy in a very human way, with themes of grief, chosen family, healing, and figuring out how to move forward.
