exiting at 28th instead of 27th even when I’m walking south so I can cross the flower district. I swear it has a micro climate. Also some of the hardest working cats in Manhattan.

Age your cookie dough
•••
Keep your cookie dough in the fridge and bake off a couple a day until you find the sweet spot for a more flavorful bake with a better texture. (I admit baking a couple of cookies also makes for a diverting toddler activity after dinner, but that’s not the point).

St. Dalfour Blueberry Jam
•••
Best swap for recipes calling for homemade blueberry jam that can be found in stores, imo. Contains whole blueberries. My dad bartered for cases and cases of this jam once in my childhood (I don’t know why!) and it took so many years to go through it all. Great for jam bars, etc.

Milk Chocolate Covered Graham Cracker
$9
•••
The first thing I ate after giving birth. It’s pretty much a perfect treat, comes in dark and milk chocolate. A leveled up version of the Keebler Double Grahams. Unfortunately both contain palm oil so I stopped buying them but if anyone comes across a palm oil free version pls let me know.

Double Chocolate Layer Cake, Deb Perelman’s edit
•••
my go to birthday cake for grownups. For a dinner party “just a small slice” crowd, I make a 2/3 recipe for 3 tall layers in a 5” cake pan. It’s not too sweet, the secret ingredient is hot coffee. Use the good stuff. Having a set of three spring form cake pans of the same size makes this a very convenient bake. It’s been simplified to a one bowl recipe so you 100% have to sift the cocoa. Don’t mess around! Cream cheese frosting instead of ganache is also a big time saver because it’s much easier to ice.
