Rec of the Week for Jul 31-Aug 6, 2026: My most earnest rec - open a Roth IRA and auto deposit as much as you can every month., by Sarah B
My most earnest rec - open a Roth IRA and auto deposit as much as you can every month.
Go to vanguard, follow the steps to open a Roth IRA. If you can, auto deposit $625/month, which will max you out to the allowable limit for the year. Invest it in VTSAX. This money goes in post-tax, but grows tax free and is not taxed when you take it out. Do this for 10 years and you will have over $100k. While it's a retirement account, you are allowed to take funds out to buy your first home or for higher ed. Most importantly, time goes really fast and having money saved by the time you hit your 40s gives you options and flexibility. Start a new business, quit your job, ask for what you want at work. I will literally jump in a zoom call and walk through setting up an account.

Embarrassed of my Geography skills no more
I want to kiss my bestie on the mouth for recommending this app to me. I used to be embarrassingly bad at Geography and now I can find every single country on the map.
Additionally, this app has U.S. states, U.K. counties, London boroughs, and Ukrainian oblasts.

EstateSales.NET
A wonderful weekend pastime, it has long been a family hobby. A real treasure when you find one of an artist or a collector or an author and get a peak into their interesting life. Most things I own are from estate sales.
Here are a few tips:
1) Search for zip codes in the older more established neighborhoods of your city. You’ll often find more antiques that way.
2) The sale organizers usually do a good job of titling the sale, search based on what you’re looking for i.e. fashion, art, furniture. Skim through the photos and see if there’s anything specific that catches your eye, typically there’s more treasures like that.
3) If you go often enough you will begin to know the people who organize the sale. Some are much better at the job than others and you can start to visit their sales specifically.
4) Have a decent idea of what you’re looking for going in so you can have a somewhat curated search while you shop, but don’t be so tunnel-visioned that you miss a real treasure.
5) Google reverse image search is a great resource if you want to know what something is or its value.
6) The final days of the sale have steep discounts, sometimes it’s worth it to wait and shop those days.

LL Bean Garden Clogs With Friends
Three of us have these now and we call them our cult shoes. They go with everything! I’ve worn them to work, in the garden and to the bar. Before recommending them to you I bought a backup pair in case they sell out, that’s how load bearing these clogs have become in my sartorial life.

Yamazaki Tosca Bread Box
I'm petitioning for the bread box to come back in fashion! It's such a smart, useful storage vessel, not only for bread, but for a variety of other things (daily supplements, anything not-so-cute that you need to keep within arm's reach, etc.). And this one comes in a delightful butter yellow!

Samin Nosrat’s Lemon Miso Dressing
In Samin we trust. This is THEE best dressing I have ever made at home. It would be delicious in any salad situation but right now we’re loving it on a kale, peach, and mint salad. Throw some feta in there if you’re feeling wild. Chef’s kiss.

Comfort Colors heavyweight long sleeve tee
$18.25There is a specific t-shirt I remember borrowing from my high school boyfriend; weighty, almost sweatshirt-like, but just a touch lighter. It was perfection, and it has been reborn as the Comfort Colors heavyweight long sleeve tee. A rainbow of colors + a non-appalling price.

Teux Deux App
Been using since it was…invented? Developed? Love arranging my week each Sunday evening and anything you don’t get to automatically rolls over to the following day. As a big dreamer with currently limited capacity the “Someday” tabs are also perennially being filled up.

Vintage Blue Chore Coat
$111.25I cannot with the perfection of this beauty. Also, this whole store might be the best thing I've come across all year.
