Cube (1997)
•••
I first saw Cube when I was a kid during our ritual Sunday morning sci-fi movie screening with my family while breakfast was cooking and all the windows were open letting the scent of “outside” in (my fave), but I was transfixed on the tv. A psychological thriller/horror about a group of strangers trapped in an endless maze-like structure, where each room presents its own set of challenges they must work together in order to escape. Each person has a unique set of skills designed to help the collective, but tensions run high and survival makes people do crazy things. For those who love sci-fi (especially 90’s), mystery, and a bit of Kafka. One of a handful sci-fi movies I revisit decades after.

Maybe because this is the first Wong Kar-Wai I saw, this is my favorite. This film felt like a fairy tale, one that is filled with desire for a lost love trying to experience even just a piece of it again. The setting is futuristic, but you feel lost in the past the entire time. It’s atmospheric, captivating, and captures the feeling of longing in only a way Wong Kar-Wai can. The third installment of the Love Trilogy, so while it’s recommended to watch in order, you don’t need to in order to fall in love with this masterpiece.

House of Yes (1997)

A screwball comedy ft a mentally unbalanced Parker Posey who believes she’s Jackie-O. Set during Thanksgiving, her twin brother (Josh Hamilton) arrives home with his new fiancée (Tori Spelling) sending Jackie (Posey) into a delightfully comedic spiral of rage, but she isn’t the only one in the family with issues. Posey is the star of the movie, and the reason I love it. She’s unhinged, dramatic, and delivers every line with perfection (“Were you poor? Did you eat chicken pot pie?”). I love chicken pot pie btw. The writing is so witty I still think about it.
