Getting a AAA TripTik Map
•••
Driving cross country, or going on a big adventure, the TripTik Map, and downloading offline maps to your phone—or really any detailed physical map—is super useful for avoiding getting too turned around. (E.g. Stretches of the Blue Ridge Parkway drop cell service, so GPS navigation can be unreliable!)

Hunting for fairy stones
•••
These rate staurolite formations only occur in a few places on the planet, and the Blue Ridge Mountains are one of them. Appalachian folklore says they are crystallized fairy tears and talismans of protection. Fairy Stone State Park offers the opportunity to hunt for your own!

Kanuga
•••
If he’s going to be in the Hendersonville area, we love staying at Kanuga. While it’s a part of the episcopal diocese, you don’t have to worry about that aspect at all, it’s completely unobtrusive. Stay in a cottage/cabin, campsite, or the inn, comes with a hearty breakfast and several on-site trails. Quick ~45 min from Asheville, as well as near to other hiking trails. We frequent White Duck Taco, West First Wood-Fired pizza, the Co-op, Underground Baking Co., Whit’s, & Oklawaha Brewing Company. Cute downtown with a little gem & mineral museum.
