Imagining the Grateful Joy of Insects
•••
A possibly dumb thought process, but I sure as hell enjoy it. As you watch the bees and butterflies visit yours garden, I like to imagine their POV: “This lady planted this swamp milkweed just for me!” Or, “A new patch of hyssop and beebalm, how exciting!”

Grow Your Own Cut Flower Garden
•••
Probably too late for this season, but make plans for next year by prepping an unused part of the lawn in full sun by starting to kill the turf grass to make a garden bed. Grow easy annuals like zinnias and dahlias, and native perennials like black eyed susans. Cut bundles as they bloom, put in a bucket in your front yard for neighbors to grab for free. Joyfully watch as passerbys — tots in strollers, dog walkers, families — grab a bouquet.

Cattle Panel Trellis
•••
Not available at most big box stores and a pain in the butt to transport home, but affordable, sturdy, and stunning once the pole beans, squashes, cucumbers are climbing all over it. Trellis gardening is also space-efficient since plants that usually require a ton of square footage are instead growing vertically.

Nothing better than crispy edges, the fun cake slices of turf, and making off color jokes.

Prairie dock (Silphium terebinthinaceum)
•••
It’s stunning in both a wild prairie and in a more planned garden setting. It’s towering height may reach 10 feet tall. It deserves all the awe it inspires, a pollinator and bird favorite.
