I’m thinking of pulling my kids out of school and doing a travel year. My family did this when I was a kid, so I have a sense of the possibilities, but I need modern recs! Give me all your homeschooling/worldschooling/unschooling resources, your favorite family travel recs, favorite places you’ve returned to, etc etc!

Green School Bali: Our family was lucky enough to spend 2 years in Bali, pre-Covid. The Green School was an amazing home base for our 2 boys at the time and an awesome place to explore that part of the world from.

Boundless Life: We have loved doing Boundless Life cohorts. You can do 3 months at a time, they put the kiddos in school, help you with housing, and you have a built-in community. And they have locations on 5 continents :). They also do shorter cohorts of 1-month in December and summer to dip your toes in. We have done Spain (Estepona in Andalusia) Uruguay (La Barra, near Punta del Este and Jose Ignacio). Both are right on the beach. Definitely the “easy button” for worldschooling.

Notice & Note (Kylene Beers and Bob Probst): I’m a teacher… and if you can pull it off, I think homeschooling can be great, especially if you’re able to adventure. That said, reading is so much more complex than decoding, connecting, and predicting for upper elementary + kids, which is what I’ve heard some homeschooling families say it boils down to. This is a teacher resource, but if you were to get one book on helping your kids read for meaning, this would be it.

Reading, writing and arithmetic:): Keep it simple and hit the basics really well. The rest of your experience will fill in the other aspects of homeschooling. Get some great book recommendations from John Senior’s Good Books list, pick a math curriculum and stick with it, and have your kids write about something everyday. If they’re young, have them dictate and you write it down until they can start to take over.
