30th anniversary of the crowning jewel in the Afghan Whigs’s catalog. It is film noir in an album form. Betrayal, lust, murder, true crime. It’s all here. The final three songs are in contention for end of album run. ‘Bulletproof,’ Summer’s Kiss,’ and arguably the best song in their catalog, ‘Faded.’ It’s meant to be listened to as one song and you should. The Whigs’s are on tour right now and they’re one of the best live bands anywhere. Go see them. Go listen to this record. One of my highest recommendations. Go to town, burn it down, turn around and get your stroll on, baby.

R.E.M. - Automatic For The People

Is it my favorite album of all-time? Possibly. I’m not a huge R.E.M. fan like others, but I bought this album (on cassette!) the week it came out and it’s been a staple of my life ever since. I love that it came out during the height of grunge, an album that is almost the polar opposite of that sound. As I’ve gotten older, the themes of mortality and loss have hit home in ways that it didn’t when I was 16, or 25, or 33, or 40. And I will always contend that the final three song run is the greatest ending to an album ever. Ever. It’s better than ‘Abbey Road,’even. I want ‘Sweetness Follows’ to be played st my funeral.

One of the greatest albums of the 1990s that you’ve never heard of. But not grunge or new jack swing or Achy Breaky Heart. If you recommend this album to others, you will become a person of great taste to them. Put your earbuds in, take a seat and immerse yourself in the sounds of Spain.
