A Life Worthy of Our Breath | Krista Tippett x Ocean Vuong
•••
From the episode description: Krista interviewed the wise and wonderful writer Ocean Vuong on March 8, 2020 in a joyful, crowded room full of podcasters in Brooklyn. A state of emergency had just been declared in New York around a new virus. But no one guessed that within a handful of days such an event would become unimaginable... I was IN THIS ROOM on the day this interview was taped and watched it live, shoulder to shoulder with my fellow podcast lovers, tears streaming down my face. The room was so still -- we all hung on Krista and Ocean's every word. Three days later we were in full lockdown. So this one's special to me, and special in general. Being a part of that has become a core memory for me.

Play | Flunk
•••
This rec request sent me down the rabbit hole of my liked songs asking myself, “does this sound pink?” Decided Play by Norwegian band Flunk does. Pulled from Music from the O.C. Mix 4. Never watched the show but mined the mixes for some real gems.

Shuggie Bain | Douglas Stuart

This audiobook is a commitment and graduate level listening material. Tackling the brogue alone will make the plaque fall away from your brain. But you’ll stay for the riveting story. Great for a long drive.

Lie Down and Listen

Fanatical sound bather here. Live for a sound-infused savasana and never met a Tibetan bowl I didn't like. But combine those two things with live classical music in some fab space on a comfy cushion? Sign me up! Never been, but excited this experience is coming to NYC in the fall! Must try!

Perhaps you'll remember this outstanding cover from the opening intro sequence to Season 3, Episode 2 of The Bear. Or perhaps as an incredible redux of a favorite track from your youth. Listen on repeat.

Ologies | Alie Ward
•••
This rec came to me from my seedy-bread-obsessed bff (see rec for Danish Bread) and I thank her for it often. Alie Ward is a delight and laugh-out-loud funny with her set-ups, side commentary and sound effects. Meanwhile, I learn so much about whatever "ology" is on deck with these expert-led deep dives about practically everything from Otters to ADHD to Revolutions and Social Change. Special shout out to the Fromology ep (cheese), which had me giggling non-stop. "Smologies" for kids is also an utterly brilliant off-shoot of the main thing. Smol or large, Ologies is a great family listen on a long car trip or a welcome break from anything news or politics.
