The Lost Garden by Helen Humphreys

Helen Humphreys should be better known than she is. I love this book so much that I read it every year and I’ve also gifted it to several people. It’s set in WWII and is an awkward love story, but it’s about so much more: human relationships, vulnerability,Land Girls and rare roses. Has some super-realism too.

The Visitor

I loved this movie so much that I watched it three times in succession, convincing my husband to watch once too. It’s a “little” film with big themes — not heavy handed— about how people can open up, change, forge connections. It seems more relevant than ever in this time of deportations. It’s also charming and touching. Five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Today I remembered this lovely quote from Thomas Turino's book, Music as Social Life: "For me, good music making or dancing is a realization of ideal— Possible— human relationships where the identification with others is so direct and so intense that we feel, for those best moments, as if our selves had merged. It is the sounds we are making, our art,that continually let us know that we have done so or that we are failing to achieve this ideal Being in seamless synchrony with others feels wonderful, and it is one of the main experiences that attracts me to musical performance again and again."
