The bird that turned me into a birder. Someone pointed me toward Merlin Bird ID during the pandemic and I realized all I needed was a pair of binoculars and sitting in our yard staring at stuff could be a legit hobby. Mostly I saw LBBs... until this baddie. Their story is amazing, their song beautifully distinctive, and we happen to live in one of the only places in the U.S. where they show up. I adore these little punks.

We have one in our backyard on our pond. She’s been here since we moved in. We love watching her fly in and stalk around the pond. Her wings are so majestic and it’s so peaceful to watch her in her little kingdom.

I know they’re common, but there’s something solid and sure about mallard ducks. I genuinely like their colours too! Make great prints.

Saw one of the males in the Quinault Rain Forest and just gasped. But really loving all bluebirds, since I’ve been calling my baby that lately, and listening to it on the Band on the Run album with her 💙

I love painted buntings! It’s hard to be sad when you’re lucky enough to spot these magnificent little rainbows in the wild. Nature, what can’t you do?! They’re a rare sighting in my area, but peak sightings are usually May and June. The females and young males look like tiny limes with wings!

I love the spectacle of the singular osprey nest, somewhere precarious, ostentatious, babies screeching at all hours, parents hunting and diving for fish to bring back to said screeching babies. I could watch them do their dance all day. It feels so special.

I love these little endangered shore birds. Also, my town shuts down portions of the beach during nesting season which really helps in identifying the local villains/good guys based on who is and isn’t mad about it. And how sweet is their name?!

They dgaf about anyone. They will nest on your car, poop in your shawarma, steal a full bag of chips out of your bag, use the crosswalk like a human and make you wait. These are all things I’ve seen them do and I respect it.

Striking birds (although sadly only the male has this bright red-orangey color, the gals are brown). But also it is bc my kids who are starting to pay attention to the occasional blue jays, call them “red jays”

I’m a Looney girl myself. They’re just so pretty, always travel in pairs 🥹, and can make really beautiful but creepy sounds. I feel like I get lulled into a spell whenever I’m around them <3

Sorry my favorite bird would kick your favorite bird’s ass in a fight. They steal fish from fishermen, have the most mournful calls, and carry their baby on their backs. Just graphically so crisp and beautiful. Perfect birds.

Wilson’s Warbler
•••
I struggle to answer this question because I have favorite birds for times of year and areas I’m in. But! For the sake of having an answer—there are lakes by my house where if I am patient, I can usually spot a Wilson’s Warbler. Much less patience is required in the winter and spring. But look at the little guy!!!! Shockingly bright yellow, and he has that little hat of black. If that ain’t the silliest thing!!!! They’re also small and flighty, very shy. I think of them as being named Wilson. Look at Wilson and his silly hair.

Roseate Spoonbill
•••
One of my favorites is the Roseate Spoonbill because they are rare to spot in the wild (I’ve only seen one on Cumberland Island) and one time I was studying feather chart meanings and a pink feather meant, “love in the form of a child was coming my way”. I remember thinking, “who finds a pink feather in the wild?!” feeling very skeptical and sad because I had been struggling with infertility and a miscarriage. After a hurricane I found a Roseate Spoonbill pink feather on the beach tangled in some reeds and shortly after found out I was pregnant and with a girl! Probably one of the most magical experiences of my life.
