Barbra Streisand One Voice (1986)
•••
In 1986, after a decade’s long hiatus from live performance, Barbra Streisand opened her Malibu home to 500 of her closets friends and industry colleagues and put on an intimate benefit concert under the stars to raise money for World Peace (?), World Hunger (???)…something like that. Introduced by Robin Williams, attended by Whitney Houston, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Willis, and Liz Taylor, with a surprise guest appearance by Barry Gibb, this is truly and actually An Iconic event. Can you even imagine how it would feel to catch sight of her silhouette through the fog as the music swells. The styling is a permanent fixture on the mood board. Babs is charming and ethereal and a powerhouse the whole night. Even in the recording you can sense that the veil is thin, and that truth-tellers, divas, and music lovers across space and time are flitting about the malibu gardens (it really is shakespearean, as robin williams remarks). Maybe my spirit was there all along.

Madonna and Sandra Bernhard sing I Got You Babe (1989)
•••
The fits, the hair, the sort of dancing. The crowd going nuts. I get very “I hate gay halloween, what do you mean you’re ex-best friends Sandra Bernhard and Madonna singing I Got You Babe during the 1989 "Don't Bungle The Jungle" benefit concert?” about this.
