As I've gotten older (only 30! Very young!) my regrets have started to pile up and I see how the choices I made shaped my life in a certain way, one that, looking back, I wouldn't have chosen. It is difficult, to realize you've picked wrong, and you're stuck. But the reality is, it is rare that anything is stuck one way forever. That is a thesis of Persuasion, which Brandon Taylor writes about this brilliantly in his foreword to the new edition. It is a novel about regret and mistakes. But it's also a novel about hope. Because sometimes, you get another chance. You can try again, armed with everything you now know. Isn't that beautiful? Good novel, good essay.

'Moonstruck Knows The Best Things In Life Aren't Chosen' by B.D. McClay

"As the film knows, most of the things in life that matter aren’t chosen. But sometimes we at least get to love the wrong people, who might just be the right people after all." I love most of what B.D. McClay writes - this was my entry to her work. It takes a movie I've loved, Moonstruck - Cher! Nicholas Cage! Opera and Brooklyn and Old School Italian restaurants - and puts it in the context of how we all live. Maybe I'm a sap, maybe I think about this piece more now that I'm with someone that I never thought I'd pick, yet makes me happy in a way I never expected. Maybe this rec is way more about myself than the piece itself. Maybe that's why I love it. But isn't that what good writing should do? Shouldn't it make you understand your life in a better way? I think so. Good movie, good essay.
