Uncle Elephant (Arnold Lobel)
•••
I’m sad my kids have grown out of Arnold Lobel. There’s such a longing in this book, and we should all trumpet the dawn. Voomarooom!

Charles E. Martin's Island Treasury (Charles E. Martin)
$50
•••
This (old) series is new to me, but I’m already in love with this group of fictional kids growing up on Monhegan Island, a real- life special place in Maine. If you’ve visited you’ll recognize the architecture and locations, like swim beach and the cathedral woods. My favorite is when they decide to rent out their clubhouse to guests in the summer!

Jenny and the Cat Club (Esther Averill)
$21.95
•••
A magical series of books for kids making the transition to read aloud chapter books. Who wouldn’t love a band of neighborhood cats, each with their own personality, who take the shy, timid cat Jenny under their wings. In this series they explore the city, sail the world, visit a hotel, and always dance the sailor’s hornpipe.

Katie Morag books (Mairi Hedderwick)
•••
I loved these books as a kid about Katie Morag, a little girl growing up on a tiny island off the coast of Scotland. The illustrations are delightful, as are the stories of island life, but Katie Morag is the real treasure. She’s messy, human, makes mistakes, has a bit of a temper but a big heart, and gets into all sorts of trouble delivering the mail, readying a sheep for the fair, and dealing with little siblings.

Puzzle Dungeon (Susannah Leigh)
$11.99
•••
My kids love this series of books from Usborne by Susannah Leigh and illustrated by Brenda Haw. It’s a search and find book with puzzles and kids doing wild things like exploring dungeons and helping mermaids or lost baby dinosaurs. I also can’t wait for this style of 90s illustration to have a major resurgence.

One Kitten for Kim (Adelaide Holl)
$22.09
•••
A fun book for kids who love to outsmart their parents. Kim must give away all of the brand new kittens but one - but his parents never said he couldn’t pick up a whole host of other pets! I’ve found that many of the vintage titles from the Weekly Reader Children’s Book Club series are absolute hidden gems.

The Sea Serpent and Me (Dashka Slater and Catia Chien)
•••
One of those books that will mean something different to you than your child, and make you cry good tears. The sweetest book about doing brave things and going out on your own, and letting go, and growing up, without being saccharine or didactic.

Our Animal Friends at Maple Hill Farm (Alice and Martin Provensen)
•••
A perennial favorite book in my house. Pick up anywhere but don’t skip the “quiet corner of an overgrown field,” which makes us sad and happy at the same time. My kids love it because it feels real, but it’s also funny.

Cat Alley (Ib Spang Olsen)
•••
Everything by Ib Spang Olsen. This one follows a brother and sister exploring the old ramshackle buildings next to their boring apartment building, with kids popping out of every nook and cranny, no parents in sight, and lots of stray cats, and many opportunities to operate heavy machinery or to try out seven-league boots.
