The Hard Crowd: Essays 2000-2020 (Rachel Kushner): I am also a lover of essays and really love Rachel Kushner's writing. She's a San Francisco gal with some great stories. Her fiction is great, too!

Anne Helen Petersen: This was my AHP gateway “essay”. Her Bama Rush series turned me into a subscriber.

James Kylstra · Answer

The New Yorker: The Really Big One: Gripping (old now) piece in the New Yorker about a big earthquake and tsunami that’s supposed to happen sometime in the next century or so in the Pacific Northwest. Read it right before a trip to the Oregon coast and it freaked me out!

Pulphead by John Jeremiah Sullivan: Am always watching for any essay by JJS. In this collection, essays 3, 6, 9, 10, and 11 knocked me flat. The rest are merely very, very good.

Kathryn Schulz: Any time I see an article written by Kathryn Schulz, I read it. Even if it's about something that I have no interest in or do not enjoy (aka stinkbug invasion), I know I'm going on a literary joy ride every time.

Serious Face by Jon Mooallem: Funny, thoughtful, smart, tender. Jon can make a long form story about anything into something you won’t be able to stop thinking about.

Jia Tolentino: Her book Trick Mirror is great and so are her essays!
