The Most Helpful Internet

Turns out there's a better way to be online.

By Rec League

Happy Friday everyone!

A huge round of applause to all of you for helping us bring Rec League to life. It feels like it’s really beginning to flourish around here, doesn’t it? Wanted to say a quick hello to the newcomers.

If you’re new here, welcome to Rec League, our shared project to build a better corner of the internet.

Here’s the rundown in 30 seconds...

What is Rec League?

Rec League is an app for sharing the things you love and recommend.

How do people use it?

People use Rec League to reflect on the things they’re into and help other people along the way.

Things people use Rec League for: research, trip planning, exchanging tips and life hacks, finding stuff (like camping gear and playlists), learning new and interesting things, asking questions and getting helpful answers. Monetizing their intel if they feel like it!

Who is on here?

We have a lot of experts in the crowd here: James Beard Award-winning chefs, New York Times Best-Selling authors, professional athletes, Off-Broadway comedians, grad students, OG recommendation queens, people’s parents, and the list goes on and on. You’re in good company.

What's important to us?

Rec League will continue to evolve and refine as it grows, but there are a few things that will always remain core to us:

- That it’s human
- That it’s positive
- That it’s safe
- That it’s helpful
- That it’s fun

This is a platform built on helpful neighborly exchange. When you create a healthy digital space, trust forms, and shared community benefits accrue over time. Speaking of, have you tried making a request for a rec yet?

Who we are

Rec League is built by a small team of hackers, artists, and writers. Our backgrounds include work for big companies like Substack, small family businesses, and the Hammer Museum.

Why we’re doing this

It’s unnecessarily hard to find great, genuine intel online. The internet feels broken in this way, there’s just too much slop. We’re using our skills to build a genuinely positive, expressive platform that helps people connect with great information.

The end goal

Build a flourishing, positive space online actually worth spending time in! Something that feels somewhat like the old internet (original, human) but is decidedly a new internet: expressive, joyful, useful, and connective. If we succeed, maybe we’ll take down Instagram once and for all. More likely, we’ll prove that there’s a better way to be online.

We are so excited by the early response to Rec League and love the energy and positivity growing here every day. Keep it up and spread the word!

Have a great weekend.

Chris, James, Grier, Harrison, Louise, and Hannah
