The Buffalo Bills Christmas Hallmark Love Story Movie
•••
The football Buffalo Bills, not the other ones. The link is to a delightful podcast episode where the movie is discussed by (among other very funny folks) poet of the 21st century David Roth. The podcast is very, very funny. More information about the movie itself and its deeply strange premise can be found on the Hallmark website. I have not and will not watch the actual movie, preferring to enjoy it in podcast form, but I understand that Joe Pantoliano does a terrific job.

No comedy in the video, just excellent sea shanty sung by people who in other contexts are very, very funny. Some pandemic magic.

Bijan Stephen’s Newsletter
•••
Stephen is a cultural and critical polymath who writes an occasional free newsletter when not writing, streaming or performing elsewhere. The newsletter is thoughtful and deep, in theory it’s about “the Internet” but in practice it’s about contemporary culture more generally. It comes out irregularly, maybe one to four times a year. Give it a shot!

Custom Retro Video Game Screens
•••
Computer wizard Alice Averlong has reverse engineered classic video games to make pixel perfect Castlevania and Mario screens with whatever text you’d like to include. There is a lot of effort, expertise and ingenuity required to make these tools, and they are pretty silly (now you can replace “I Will Get My Revenge” with “Happy Birthday, Brad!” or whatever) and that is part of the fun. Anyway, have a ball! The list of games is gigantic and you can make any of them include swears if you want to.

Preserving Filmstrips for Future Generations
•••
Mark O'Brien is acquiring, scanning and archiving film strips in his spare time, the kind they showed in schools from the 1960’s through the 1980’s. He posts versions on archive.org so you can see them, they are marvels.

Dinosaur Comics
•••
Ryan North, recent author of “The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl” and lots of other stuff, has been producing a daily series of comics using exactly the same almost-clip-art images of dinosaurs since 2003. It’s consistently funny. There is a lot more to Ryan North, early webcomics entrepreneur and guy who fell down a hole, and I also recommend The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl in the strongest possible terms, but Dinosaur Comics are a great place to start with him.

@Minna Kelly with a slam dunk, I have been listening to this nonstop since the rec first appeared. This is what podcasting was made for. Postscript: If you like “giant, decade-spanning comprehensive history” podcasts, you might also enjoy The History of Philosophy Without any Gaps.

Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont-Spelling Bee
•••
More in the Taskmaster vein of getting a bunch of comedians together and lightly humiliating them by forcing them to spell “Capsaicin” or “Phylogenetic”. The highlights are the “assistant” comedians: Chaos Gremlin Sam Campbell in the linked clip, deadpan genius Aaron Chen in an earlier series. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation posts long clips to YouTube and full episodes are out there for those who look.

Antique 1970’s Soap
•••
Estate sale soap “from the 1970’s.” Critical context: they are still producing this soap. You could just buy it new! That said, if you do buy a bar of this soap tomorrow, you will be buying a new bar of very 1970’s soap.

Air-Sea Dolphin is Not Apparently a Joke
•••
The folks who made Homestar Runner made a lot of silly music. As they became more successful, they started collaborating more and more with serious musicians, until Air-Sea Dolphin, a collaboration with folks from “The Apples in Stereo” and “Of Montreal”. There isn’t much of it, and it shows up on a double ep with a fake band they made up, but it’s just era appropriate Indy rock and it works.

Wikipedia Category: Fictional Music Groups
•••
Let’s be real, this category and its sister category “bands with fictional stage personas” are missing a lot: I didn’t see Buster Poindexter or Sloshy on either list (and the Wombles are on both). That said, there is (conservatively) hours of potential fun here. Jabberjaw! Sonic the Hedgehog was in a rock band! Bennie and the Jets! Maybe add Chris Gaines to one of those lists if you’re the editing type.

Matt Levine, a Comedy Banker
•••
I could not be less interested in finance. I don’t have any finance background beyond living through financial crises. I don’t listen to Planet Money. BUT. Matt Levine is hilarious, does not require that his readers are bankers, has an even temper and journalistic reasonableness that makes the punchlines hit very hard indeed. I wish I was this funny about anything. The newsletter is free to sign up for although the archives used to be paywalled.

Daniel Lavery’s “Now You See Me”
•••
Daniel Lavery has adapted the movie “Now You See Me” (2013), apparently more or less from memory, into a dynamic full cast audio experience-slash-happening-slash-adventure. Lavery perfectly captures “… the heart of a heist movie and the brains of a heist movie trailer as described by a child” You will snort milk out of your nose if you listen to it while drinking milk.

Not beat like “evocative of Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg“, but beat like when Kerouac described a “beat generation” - Today in Tabs is both truly defeated and kind of musical.
