i think brian eno said this album only sold like thirty thousand copies when it first came out, but everyone who bought it started a band. the music is great it its own right, but i do think thereās something especially special about how generative it still feelsāwhenever i listen, i want to write a new song, try out a new form of art, start a third or fourth or fifth band, etc etc. (i think nico adds more than people give her credit for.) shoutout to brooks forsyth who used to cover the velvets at my high schoolās open mic nights when i was first starting to take music seriously and was getting into rock history and art rock and such. what a revelation it feels like to go from thinking led zeppelin was the pinnacle of rock to jamming on lou reed songs. things can be so much more than you think they can be! what an idea! imagine that! and hey, who says you need three chords and the truth? āheroinā only has two! in conclusion, technical virtuosity be damnedāgo make something!

awesome sound going down, mang. fun fact: this concept album directly inspired the creation of spongebob squarepants, so you have likely experienced its influence even if youāve never heard it. usda prime choice tunes here include: āthe mollusk,ā āthe golden eel,ā ābuckingham green,ā and āocean man.ā weenās quebec and 12 golden country greats are also top-ten contenders for me, but if iām stuck on a desert island and can only have one ween album (sad!), itās this one.

i remember first hearing this album while i was working running books in my college bookstore. this older hipster guy who i found pretentious and annoying was like ācheck this outā and put it on, so i was extremely primed to hate it. but when it came on half of us just huddled around the stereo entranced. it was unlike anything iād ever heard. i later saw them live at la sala rossa in montrĆ©al with the dirty projectorsāmaybe the best show iāve been to. so so good.

debut album of (mostly) instrumental post-rock from everyoneās favorite montrĆ©al anarchists, godspeed you! black emperor. thereās two drummers. thereās two bassists (one mostly plays contrabass). thereās even two 16mm projectionists, whose work is integral to their live shows. the band etched a drone into the runoff groove of the vinyl version of the album; itās runtime is technically infinite as a result. your reaction to this information is probably a pretty good indication of whether youāll think this is pretentious garbage or about the most incredible one hour/infinity of music youāve ever experienced. give it a chance just in case itās the latter. also: i have a tattoo of the album cover (the cd cover, as seen aboveāthe lp is different and in true diy spirit has three different versions itself; the packaging was handmade for the initial release of 500 copies). also also: you may have heard āeast hastingsā in 28 days laterādanny boyle had the song in mind for the soundtrack when making the film and listened to it regularly throughout the process. a little resistance always maybe, stubborn tiny lights vs. clustering darkness forever ok?

pavements (dir. alex ross perry)

great, fun documentary from 2024 about the band pavement. experimental in style: in addition to covering the band itself, it also digs into the making of a fictionalized biopic about the band as well as a live sung-through jukebox musical featuring their songs (both of which are also directed by alex ross perry). malkmus is curmudgeonly in an endearing way and wonders aloud about whether any of this is a good idea. maybe not? worth a watch just the same. no big hair!

check out this new collection of songs from nc artists, including my project, prophetic perfect! youāre going to love cor de lux, neon ruins, the haks, long relief, alla prima, and the king teen (at the very least). there are 70 songs in total, so youāre bound to find something you like! all money from sales of the compilation will go to the flat iron, an independent music venue in greensboro that could use some support. blank tapes put it together. theyāre ncās premier music webzine. definitely worth keeping up with as a way to discover new artists across the state.
