Wild Nights with Emily

Molly Shannon as Emily Dickinson. It’s a little loose for a period piece which I really appreciated. A bit of a romp but also romantic and whimsical.

The kind of movie that’s better to go in without knowing much but a general theme is a woman's right to chose.

MIT Open Courseware Film History Class
•••
I got the text book, followed the syllabus and watched the films on my own (usually four of five more films than listed because 2020) and then watched the lectures. And now I’m a certified film snob and I love it. This was after going to film school for animation but I missed a lot of this basic history and always felt like a phony because of it.

About a French couple who loved each other as much as they loved volcanoes. Some of the most beautiful archival footage in existence. Come for the love story, stay for the retro volcanologist suits. Currently streaming on NatGeo/Hulu.

Magic Mike XXL followed by Pee-wee’s Big Holiday
•••
The ultimate feel-good double feature. No, you do not need to have seen earlier Magic Mike or Pee-wee films to enjoy this (and in fact, please don’t bother with the other Magic Mikes. XXL ONLY). I wont spoil why they go so well together but trust me, you wana watch them in that order. And always remember, you can watch a movie (or two) over multiple nights!

Look up the inflight movie options in advance

My hand gets so tired scrolling through all of the options. I like to board the plane with a list of top contenders and then narrow it down once I’m settled.

Pick a director, watch a lot of their movies

Some suggestions: Joan Micklin Silver Robert Altman Agnes Varda (pictured) Jacques Demmy Earnst Lubitch Spike Lee Abbas Kiarostami Federico Fellini Charlie Chaplin Francois Truffaut Yasujirō Ozu And a reminder that you can watch a movie over multiple nights because movies are long and sleep is important.

Watching a movie over the course of a few nights
•••
Don’t settle for TV just because movies are long. Enjoy a movie over two, three, or even four nights. You can season your popcorn differently each night!
