What’s your all-time favorite novel? I’m just looking for the GOAT; I’m tired of reading books that lots of people like but no one really loves.

Spectacularly beautiful primary character, particularly their relationship to the concept of home and the more than human world. I have re-read and listened to this novel so many times and have never found another book that nourishes me as deeply as this one.

Pick anything by Barbara Kingsolver and I’ll agree. The Poisonwood Bible passes the re-read test: high school me got one thing, me in my 20s yet another, and so on.

This book captured my attention for days. I wanted to wake up early to read before my day started. I fell so far into the characters I could smell one of them smoking, and the description of her smoking made me want to start smoking, I’m not a smoker.

A Certain Hunger (Chelsea Summers)

Deliciously funny, disgustingly addictive. This is a rec for the weird freak girls. I have read this book 4 times and every time I love it more and more. A food critic, sociopath, decides she's ready for new flavors and decides to eat her boyfriends. Written as if it's her memoir from prison she tells the story of her crimes and her unlikely downfall.

My most favorite book in the entire universe is A Stolen Past by John Knowles. Everyone knows and reads A Separate Peace but this is so much better.

He's a brilliant author - also read The Private Life of Axie Reed. This book has longing, academia, atmosphere, coming of age, looking back on choices made and regretted - it's all there.

This book is one of the most exquisite pieces of fiction I’ve ever read. It lives and breathes with such lust and abandon, and is just brimful of tenderness - I had to read it slowly because I was constantly disarmed by so many beautiful moments.

I could not put this book down. I don't normally compare books to films as they engage my brain in different ways, but this book was as enrapturing and vivid as an A24 piece. Just writing this makes me want to reread it.

The Secret History (Donna Tartt)
$19.57
•••
"The snow in the mountains was melting and Bunny had been dead for several weeks before we came to understand the gravity of our situation.” I am always trying to chase the intense pleasure of my first reading of this book. An absolutely perfect murder mystery set at an elite northeastern college, where our outsider protagonist gets seduced by a charismatic Classics professor into a strange secret society. So atmospheric, so perverse, such unforgettable characters. Whenever the air starts getting crispy, I reach for her.

this is one of my favorite books I’ve ever read. It’s an intergenerational epic. It’s really beautiful and engrossing and very funny and shows the sweep of time and human life and politics and it’s really stayed with me. Allende channeled something wild with this book.

Books I Love 📖
Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli
•••
Because you rightfully have been recommended an incredible list of recent (and wonderful) bestsellers as well as many (deservedly) classics, I dare you to go out on a limb and read a young adult novel called Stargirl. It’s YA! It’s short, quick—you have nothing to lose! It’s a coming of age story about being your own person, staying true to yourself, kindness, and how that impacts the people around you. I read it in my youth and every few years I read it again. It’s a treasure. Update: I have not seen (and didn’t know) there was a movie but I also dare you NOT to watch that because there’s no way it will be better than whatever you come up with in your head.
