San Miguel de Allende is one of our family’s favorite vacation destinations. It has a magical, storybook feel that reminds me of Disneyland—but with authentic Mexican culture, history, and charm. The Centro Histórico is absolutely beautiful: colorful streets, stunning architecture, inviting plazas, and everything is incredibly clean and walkable.
Because my children speak Spanish, they’re able to fully immerse themselves in the community. They love attending art camps at the Instituto Allende, making new friends at Xote Water Park, and playing with local and visiting children wherever we go. It’s a place where kids naturally connect, regardless of where they’re from.
Beyond the city, the surrounding countryside is equally special. The wineries are gorgeous and offer a relaxing escape for adults while remaining welcoming to families. Our absolute favorite is Mamma Mia Campestre—a family-friendly brewery and restaurant with a beautiful lake, farm animals, expansive outdoor play areas, and plenty of space for children of all ages (especially ages 1–12) to explore while parents unwind. It’s the perfect combination of great food, beautiful scenery, and family fun.
For us, San Miguel de Allende is that rare destination that truly delights every member of the family. Whether you’re wandering the cobblestone streets, enjoying incredible food, exploring local art, or spending the day outdoors, it’s a place we return to again and again.

“Though hardly a small town, San Miguel de Allende is petite compared to Mexico's other hubs — not even cracking the top 100 cities by way of population. The city is stunning — colorful Spanish colonial architecture, cobblestone streets, a vibrant art scenes and enough history to make you feel like you're stepping back in time. For better or worse, SMA has a consistently higher-end vibe than a lot”
