Remainders
•••
Wow, I cannot recommend this place enough. If a craft store and a thrift store had a baby, it would be Remainders. This warehouse style second hand store is the perfect place to go into with no shopping list, and no expectations. Here, you’ll find your classic fabric remnants and notions, along with a bin of loose crochet hooks, fill-a-bag of beads or stickers, and 50 cent rolls of ribbons. The selection is whackadoodle, the prices are unbeatable, and the staff couldn’t be kinder. Give yourself at least two hours here.

Craft Contemporary
•••
It’s truly criminal that after growing up in LA, my first visit to the Craft Contemporary Museum was just this year. Located across from the truly ostentatious Zumthor designed LACMA renovation, this place is such a humble gem. During my visit, they had an artist in residence working on mosaics, an exhibition dedicated to Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman, a design duo working in LA in the mid 20th century, as well as several contemporary responses to their work. Their gift shop is also one of the best I’ve seen in a while, full of handmade objects from around the world like this pouch stitched by Hmong students that I picked up, or handmade buttons from India.

Valley Photo
•••
I might be aging myself here, but this place was my haunt in high school, and it still proves a reliable spot to pick up a new roll of film, get an old one developed, or grab a new camera charger. They’ve been open for almost 75 years, so you know they know their stuff.

Sticker Planet
•••
Tucked away in a quiet corner of the bustling Farmers Market at the Grove, is this tiny Mecca, filled with every sticker imaginable. There are hundreds of tear away sheets you can peruse, along with decals and sticker books. For what it’s worth, their online store is pretty great too. You can get stickers by the sheet delivered to your home!
