The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemison (+ the whole Broken Earth trilogy)

Ready to argue this as the greatest contemporary science fiction novel of the 21st century. It is compulsively readable (anyone who reads sci-fi knows this is fairly rare for the territory), the world-building is brilliant, and it’s just an incredibly epic story. Every time I rec to someone I have to stress just how digestible it is; you’ll blow through the trilogy in a week or two.
