The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemison (+ the whole Broken Earth trilogy)
•••
Ready to argue this as the greatest contemporary science fiction novel of the 21st century. It is compulsively readable (anyone who reads sci-fi knows this is fairly rare for the territory), the world-building is brilliant, and it’s just an incredibly epic story. Every time I rec to someone I have to stress just how digestible it is; you’ll blow through the trilogy in a week or two.

Insomniac City by Bill Hayes
•••
One of the few memoir-ish books that has stuck with me for years—utterly, utterly tender and heartbreaking and funny. Hayes writes about New York and his relationship with the late Oliver Sacks in the most gorgeous and conversational prose; I forgot I was reading and not listening to a friend.

Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
•••
Atmospheric in a way you cannot fathom prior to reading and utterly, deliciously f*cked up. The HBO miniseries is one of the only shows I find almost better than the book.

I recommend this book to every single person I speak to. It doesn’t matter if you’re a fiction hound or the last thing you read was an IKEA manual — you will love it.

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel

Pre-pandemic pandemic literature that combines Shakespeare and the apocalypse in the most brilliant way. Changed my life in high school.
