Bon Vivantelah
Music Grows on Trees
•••
A delightful album for the kids that's also easy on adult ears. Atlanta traffic can be a real bore, but this album helped the cute kid in my backseat pass the time. 🤗 h/t @Bon Vivantelah — thank you for the rec!

Unicycling as a kid (or any age, really!)
•••
One summer, when I was in 1st grade, I attended my mom's elementary school in Japan. My class was led outside to dozens of ichirinsha (unicycles) lined at the bottom of a stairwell. We wobbled every which way on our new unicycles, and I reveled in sharing a new experience with my classmates. We admired the older students speeding across the packed sand with their sturdy cores and spinning spokes. A rambunctious group of boys would crash into each other, running over toes and making last-minute 180s. Later, I learned that Japanese public schools were required to supply unicycles—hence why some of the world’s best unicyclists were Japanese! I've owned a neon green unicycle for over a decade, but it's been years since I've gone for a ride. It's not like hopping on a bike, so I'll have to relearn all over again. Maybe this summer?

Tumble Leaf
•••
An instant win in my home! These days, it’s tricky to find children’s media that’s artful—something crafted slowly, with real heart and real materials. Tumble Leaf fulfills everything I’d want for a show. Imaginative, gorgeous, silly… and made by hand! This behind-the-scenes video goes into how they created the stop-motion and phew, what a reminder that nothing can replace the beauty of creating meaningful entertainment with real humans.

Dot matrix paper
•••
My dad used to arrive from the office bearing stacks of dot matrix paper with misprints. This was gold for my sister and me! We used the paper as make-believe medical records, invoices/receipts, ECG charts, etc. The satisfaction of pulling off the perforated edges was unmatched.

Sarah & Duck
•••
A slow, artful BBC children’s show that plops kids into a kaleidoscope of imagination. A family favorite. Such creativity! Such delight! Sarah and Duck director, Tim O’Sullivan, explained in an interview: “Tapping into the idea that when you’re five years old a trip across the living room can be the most exciting thing you do that day, depending on where you imagine yourself to be. So finding the joy and beauty in the little things meant that we naturally sidestepped any need to moralise or teach the audience something.” I expect to sing this show's praises for a very, very long time.

Peter and the Wolf
•••
When I was 8, I performed in the Peter and the Wolf ballet as a duckling. At the sound of the oboe, I waddled onstage with my duck family of four, waiting for the right musical cue to pluck a feather from my tail. Sergei Prokofiev created Peter and the Wolf specifically for children, telling this fairy tale through narration and musical composition. He used characters to introduce his audience to different instruments. The clarinet became the Cat, a flute the Bird, an oboe the Duck, and so on.
