“If you have an old Nintendo handheld somewhere and you long for the tactility of playing on original hardware, not through a software emulation layer on your phone or PC or modern console then give modding a try. Technology moves in fascinating trends. Ten years ago we were all chasing the trend of consolidation in order to minimize the number of devices we carried. But now as everything has become connected, inviting unwanted distractions, we see people moving back towards dedicated devices. The resurgence of iPods and MP3 players. Jailbroken Kindles or return to physical books. Gaming is no exception. You can own your games without worrying about a digital license expiring.
As long as you're comfortable disassembling electronics and can follow on screen instructions it's not as daunting as it seems especially since there are so many drop in replacements for displays and shells that no longer require soldering or physically cutting plastic. If you have original games then you're ready to get started. If not, get yourself a flash cart and a micro SD card and start "downloading" ROMs from a list of vetted websites on the "open internet."
