“When a couple of kids in Rangely, CO broke into an abandoned water cistern, they were expecting graffiti and empty beer bottles — not a one-of-a-kind acoustic marvel. The precise parabolic architecture of the reservoir’s bare steel walls produce an uncannily resonant “sonic bloom” — transforming simple notes into lush, ethereal, cathedral-like omnidirectional soundscapes that swirl and sustain resonance for forty seconds or more after the note ends — twice as long as the Taj Mahal’s famous 240-foot echo chamber. Now a sonic laboratory, performance space, and recording studio, the TANK hosts wonderful artists and listening events, can be booked for private recording sessions, and has free open hours on Saturdays May–November for the acoustically curious.
