“Zen Arcade was a massive swing for band like Hüsker Dü's second album, it ended up being arguably the first double-album rock opera from a hardcore band, telling the story of an angry young man who runs away from his abusive home only to find life in the big city to be just as unforgiving — culminating with the “it was all just a dream” bit used by The Wizard of Oz and Dallas. In 1984, hearing a band like this play out such an emotional and complex drama over the course of an entire album sequence was unimaginable. The first half of the album is raw and unsettling, with lead Bob Mould giving voice to rage in an extremely personal way. As the story blooms to include doomed, drug-addicted girlfriends, scenes of urban decay, and meditations on mass media, so too does the album’s influences — encompassing melancholic power pop, delicate piano interludes and psychedelic jams.
