With the precision and pacing of Dust Bunny, I could hardly believe this is his first but, there you have it, folks, and it is a blast! A young girl (a delightfully precocious Sophie Sloan) scrounges up some money and offers the hitman across the hallway (played by Mads Mikkelsen) to kill the monster under her bed. Light on the horror, plenty of action, quippy dialogue, magical original score and gorgeous cinematography. This film is so lush and witty, it feels like a mash of Del Toro, Wes Anderson, and the Coen Brothers. And yet, so uniquely Bryan Fuller, whose commentary on horror films alone I would pay to listen to on an audiobook. You'll have fun with all the supporting roles, especially Sheila Atim, Sigourney Weaver and David Dastmalcian. For me, it was just a cinematic treat, style and substance. Mikkelsen and Sloan are just lovely.”
