“A beautiful gold foil decorated shrine in the middle of Ueno Park. Similar to the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, this one is a smaller scale shrine that’s also dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu (the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate). The shrine grounds is also home to the oldest tree in Ueno, which is said to be over 600 years old! There’s also a really nice meditation pavilion designed by Hiroshi Nakamura right next to it where you can sit and enjoy the peace and quiet.”
