“online and print annual on ecology and change”

“What even is a magazine? This is a question I ask myself every time I encounter Emergence, an online platform publishing work about ecology and spirituality that makes a bonkers themed annual print edition. These are massive, costly, and formally ambitious, with an array of paper stocks, type treatments, and a lot of boldface-name contributors, compiling visual essays, video stills, interviews, poetry, and writing from the website. The tone is reverent and skews portentious and self-consciously poetic (a common trap in nature writing), but it is an undeniably beautiful printed object. Is it actually a magazine? I am not sure ... definitely worth looking at, though. Pictured is a spread from Vol. 5 (Time) and the cover of Vol. 6 (Seasons).”
