“A breakout performance by Silvana Mangano, Bitter Rice follows women laborers working through a summer season in the rice-fields of Italy's Piemonte region. Intense working conditions, bum pay, and cramped room and board are the main job hazards until a thief and his girlfriend dream up a scheme that will upend the whole operation. One of the early films of the Italian neorealism movement. If you enjoyed The Bicycle Thieves or even if you enjoy works similar to The Grapes of Wrath, you may appreciate this one 👌 Silvana Mangano is a sight to be seen! It is no wonder her performance thrust her to the top of the film industry, where she would stay all the way up to her last role in David Lynch's Dune.”
