“I recently stumbled across a Mary Sully exhibition and fell in love with her work.
Sully was a Dakota Sioux artist best known for her "Personality Portraits" which are triptychs that capture the essence of a person or just an idea- one I saw recently was entitled "Highway Rudeness" and captured just that.
In a sadly familiar story, she didn't achieve much recognition during her lifetime. But it is a treat to see her work now. The Mary Sully Foundation (linked) is working to preserve and share her work, as well as champion emerging native artists.”
