“Upstate New York that feels like the Pacific Northwest. Near Lake Placid, Saranac Lake features a state park with boat-to campsites. Some are on the shore, but the real gems are on the tiny islands dotting the lake. You can even find some that only have one campsite, which means you get to camp on a private island. I recommend renting canoes rather than motor boats for a camping experience somewhere in between backpacking and car camping. Wake up early for sunrise and watch the most spectacular scene as the fog in the lake valley disappears slowly around the tiny islands.”
