The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone

“does art make the loner or does the loner make the art? brilliant, informative, and moving.”

“Tbh this book was not what I thought it was going to be about (flaneuring through New York) and it took me a second to adjust to that, but I ended up enjoying it for what it was, which is an exploration of loneliness and contemporary artists whose work and life reflect aspects of loneliness. Also made me really want to see more work by the artists featured IRL, so I am off to the Whitney soon”

“A great place to start with Olivia Laing It’s 10 years old now but as relevant as ever”

“Admittedly, this book found me at just the right time in my life, so I have a tenderness toward it. It's a bit of a memoir, a bit of art criticism and a lovely meditation on both the pain and beauty of being alone.”
