“Camping in the Dry Tortugas is one of the most special National Park experiences I've ever had. The ferry carries you way to out to sea, about 100 miles from Cuba, to a massive brick Civil War fort surrounded by nothing but clear water, where you can spend the day snorkeling outside the crumbling moat (fun fact: a saltwater crocodile named Carlos used to live in the moat but he was relocated) and watching frigate birds and pelicans. When the ferry and the seaplanes leave you're one of only a handful of people on this tiny island in the middle of the ocean, all stars for miles. Wake up early to swim, play card games with the other campers, kayak to a remote lighthouse. Long live the National Park Service!”
