I first watched it in my college movie theater in the basement and I went in knowing nothing and my jaw was physically, literally on the floor for the entire third act. Satoshi Kon is a master of genre and style, creating visuals and an atmosphere that is intriguing and terrifying. He's also unnervingly prescient with respect to the violence of fandom culture in the 21st century (especially directed toward women) with the advent of smartphones and social media and paparazzi. Hits even harder on repeat viewings when you (kind of) have an idea of what's going on.”
