No one has lived in such a place before. In a corner of our bright, pentagonal salon there is a large electronic console that looks like a spaceship control center. Four rooms radiate from ours in a design suggesting the name of our lodge-Starfish House: One arm contains the kitchen and laboratory, from which the chef is passing us fruit, cheese, and coffee. I light one of my reeking Tuscan cigars and look out the windows at a black, virgin wilderness where moving phantasms barely suggest themselves, and where lights that are not lights gleam."”
