Christiane“One of the most magical, unique and intimate museum experiences I’ve ever had! Wharton Esherick was an American artist and designer who worked in a wide variety of media including painting, printmaking, furniture, and sculpture. His designs range from architectural interiors to handheld objects like light pulls and chess pieces. A leader in studio craft and dubbed the “dean of American craftsmen”, Esherick is probably best known for his wood furniture, which combines modernist sculptural form with functional craft. Very much focused on the “importance of the entire sculptural environment”, the best realization of Esherick’s vision for a sculptural environment is his home and studio, on Valley Forge Mountain in Malvern, Pennsylvania. The studio is a total work of art, completely built and hand crafted by Esherick. Stepping inside, I experienced an immediate flood of joy and curiosity to the senses. Everything is beautifully intertwined, and pristinely preserved. It feels like stepping back in time. The tour guides are so passionate and will show you Esherick’s tools, and his real belongings still in their shelves and drawers. Tours are limited to 8 ppl max and you must book in advance, but it’s worth it!!!!!”
