“This ideal-for-beginners, extremely-old-school way to hand-sew quilt pieces together with perfect lines and corners is MY DREAM TECHNIQUE; you fold and baste your fabric around paper (usually hexes) to form shapes, sandwich and sew the basted pieces together, then remove the paper and VOILA. It's an excellent way to reuse scrap paper (the original paper-piecers of the 1770s used letters and newspaper as their pieces, and sometimes left them in their quilts for added warmth and weight) and is extremely portable, since you're joining tiny bits together one by one. Best of all, it calls for lots of kinds of busy work, and scratches layout / paper- and fabric-cutting / whip-stitching itches, whatever you feel like doing on a given day. I have been sewing a king-size quilt off and on since 2020 with fabric I've scavenged all over the world, and it is by far my proudest craft achievement to date. Totally changed the way I feel about quilting. You can see my many photos of my process (and my cats sitting on my project) here:
