“As far west as the state of NC goes tucked in a beautiful valley there is the most magical folk arts school, modeled after the Danish folk school model. There you can learn to spin yarn, dye it from plants grown in the garden, forge knives, carve spoons, weave coverlets, build banjos, play the fiddle, and so many more traditional crafts that are very alive in this place. It is a stunning landscape with great trails and swimming holes around (near the Nantahala National Forest), two hours west of Asheville. I lived there for a year on a fellowship and it is one of the most special places. Find a way to get there if this sounds like your cup of tea- they have weekend classes, weeklong classes, work study programs, scholarships. It's a little pocket of heaven and you can learn from some incredible teachers.”
