“Just got back from six days bopping around Idaho, Utah, and Wyoming, and one of the surprise delights of my trip was stopping into a boutique with beautiful beaded denim shirts and being stopped in my tracks by two giant Sawkille mirrors—one with a silver snake and rocks throwing shadows—and a couple of their silvery flower and butterfly sconces. The shopfolk told me the pieces were on loan from Maya Frodeman gallery, so I made tracks there, where I found two extremely sweet and extremely small dogs (named Peter Doig and Lois Dodd) and galleries full of treasure: paintings by Wolf Kahn, Glenn Goldberg, and Kathryn Lynch, shallow shelves of funny little clay figures by W. Tucker (he uses his non-dominant hand to make them, with charmingly wonky results), and glass cases filled with the spillover of a Gabriella Kiss jewelry show I had just missed (think green-gold mantises, moths with moss agate wings, and onyx pinecones, plus a tray of candy-like bezel-set gem rings). And there were Sawkille pieces, too—black chairs etched with swirls and braid, an armoire with a setting sun.”
